I have heard of people using a knife and cutting out a "frame" for a photo or journaling. What you do it cut out a piece and fold the edges back so it looks matted, but it's just the other side of the paper.

In addition to the above suggestions, you can also cut away the portion that your journal box and photos cover. You can then use those pieces on the other page of a two page layout. (Does this make sense? You cut away to part of the paper that would be hidden under the journal box and photos.)
This makes your paper last longer and you get a two page spread out of one sheet.

Hope this helps! :)

I would not recommend embossing photo's. Embossing powder may contain dyes or chemicals that are not safe for your photo. If you have to emboss, mate the picture first on card stock and emboss the card stock

I'd use that instead of the white insert that comes with the scrapbooks. You'll see one pattern and when you turn the page, that page will be on the reverse of the paper.
Another idea is to make Journaling Matchbook to hold things.

have you tried transparencies? you can stamp and emboss on those (or print and emboss) and then layer over your photo. there's also a way to make your own rub-ons with printing on transparencies, but I can't remember where I saw those instructions.

My partner and I just did a page where we cut a paper in 3 sections. We flipped the middle around and she sewed the seams with a zigzag stitch. It turned out beautiful. On another one we blocked out about 8-9 sections on a plain piece of cardstock, then cut different size squares and rectangles out of dbl sided paper scraps to fit our template. Again it turned out very cool.

You could try it on an extra picture (or one of nothing) and see how it does, just play with it and see what works and looks cool. Thats why I love scrapbooking you can do anything.

Comment on What is the best digital scrapbooking program and how much does it cost? by Maneet

Great question..
This also made me browse the net for similar softwares, and I came across this one - (Reference -)

"Getting Started
There are several computer programs out there that make digital scrapbooking possible. The most popular programs are Microsoft Picture It!, Adobe Photoshop and JASC’s Paint Shop Pro.

These programs allow crafters to manipulate photos, crop out people or cut out the backgrounds, change colors, add text, borders, graphics and more. All of the programs have a learning curve, and it can be difficult to get the program to do exactly what you want it to do. If you have a lot of experience with Photoshop or another program, you should use the program for your scrapbooking instead of buying a new program.

If you are in the market for a digital scrapbooking program, some of the easiest programs to use are those put out by Hallmark, Ulead, HP and CK. With names like “Scrapbook Studio” and “Scrapbook Assistant,” these programs are designed especially for digital scrapbooking. They are easy to learn and don’t cost a lot of money, but they aren’t great in terms of flexibility or doing all the tricks that some of the higher-end photo manipulation programs will allow.

Those programs, such as Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Corel Draw and Ulead PhotoImpact, tend to have a higher learning curve but also allow you to be more creative once you figure out how to do what you want to do. These programs are more expensive, but also more versatile, as you will be able to use them for applications other than scrapbooking.

For the middle of the road in terms of difficulty, price and flexibility, Microsoft Digital Image Pro is a good choice. It’s not as expensive as Photoshop and it has more features than the scrapbook-only programs. It’s also not as hard to learn as some of the other programs. "

The following site offers free downloadable software/ order a free cd of the digital scrapping software:

The site below offers some freebies like free fonts and sketches ; free digital kits etc:

Hope it helps! (BTW, I have starred yor question too...)
Cheers
